CIOB elects new President
Allan McMullen chief executive of the Construction Industry Training Board in Northern Ireland (CITBNI) has been elected President of the CIOB.
Allan McMullen chief executive of the Construction Industry Training Board in Northern Ireland (CITBNI) has been elected President of the CIOB.
He is only the second member from Ireland to become President in the Institute's history.
Allan has been chief executive of CITB in Northern Ireland for ten years.
His career in the industry began in the family building business, where he worked his way from site foreman to managing director.
Speaking at his inauguration Allan said, "I am truly honoured to become President of the CIOB and relish the next 12 months of my Presidency".
""As many would expect with my background in training my focus will be on the people side of things.
One key initiative that I am particularly keen on is the idea of putting members first.
The concept being, that we harness the skills, abilities and energies of all of our members to promote all aspects of our work as the foremost professional management body in the construction industry.
Putting members first is about empowering the members to promote the science and practice of building and provide leadership, especially in this rapidly changing world we live in.
Our predecessors founded the Builders Society during the Industrial Revolution; now we find ourselves in the Information Age so our competencies must be relevant in that context.
"A major initiative with which both the Institute and my own organisation are both closely involved is the relatively new Sector Skills Council (SSC) for the Construction Industry, Construction Skills".
"What is most significant about ConstructionSkills from the CIOB's perspective is that for the first time the industry' skills needs are being considered from a whole industry perspective".
""Already ConstructionSkills, as one of the pathfinder SSCs, has published a sector skills agreement which sets out the training needs of the industry as a basis for agreeing with government the resources needed to ensure that the UK construction industry is world class.
I see this Sector Skills Agreement as a most important point of reference, especially for the CIOB.
"We must remember that the primary reason we exist as a professional body is not to serve our members but to serve the public".
"Two of the CIOB's key fundamental objectives are to promote the science and practice of building and the establishment of standards of competence and conduct".
"The CIOB must keep its eye on the ball in this regard".
"We must embrace change and we must be relevant".
"To achieve this we must be competent.
As President Allan's 3 key objectives are:.
* Further empower CIOB members internationally to promote the science and practice of building.
* Continue to strive that CIOB members have competencies relevant to the needs of their respective industry's worldwide.
* Play a leading role in establishing and facilitating the skills needs of the UK construction industry through CIOB involvement in ConstructionSkills.
