Many companies depend on an intake from this source for safeguarding the future of their businesses, but they are being warned that they may lose the chance of recruiting keen young entrants if they wait too long.
Max Hamps, recently appointed CITB ConstructionSkills managing agency director, said: "Recruiting early in the year means you can have the pick of the bunch".
"The volume of applications this year us a clear indication that many people are making career decisions early in the year".
"These are likely to be the most organised, focused candidates." But figures released to CIOB International indicate that women are shy of seeking careers in the construction trades.
Last year the total number of applications for apprenticeships reached just over 50,000.
Only 1,292 of these were from women compared with 48,964 from men: percentage female 2.6.
For January 2006 there were 1439 applications from men, only 55 from women but an improved percentage at 3.7.
CITB ConstructionSkills commented: "It is worth noting that whereas females actually employed as tradespeople in the construction industry is at present one per cent of its workforce, the percentage of apprenticeship applications from women is currently running at over three times this percentage".
"This could suggest that employers still aren't taking the employment of women seriously enough.".
