With 60% of respondents stating that 'green' issues currently require the most research and development (R and D); it is clear from this survey that there is a deep concern for environmental issues from within the construction industry.

The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) has announced that it will be offering its members access to a range of IT resources as part of a special CAD and IT service.

The study sought specific opinion on the current state of innovation within construction including the climate of R and D investment compared to turnover.
The survey analysed the impact of current innovations and where they were most likely to come from in terms of sector and geography.
In addition the study examined the respondent's aspirations and ideas as to what issues they felt would require an innovative response from the industry.
The respondents were also given the opportunity to express what areas they would develop with a million pound R and D budget.
Key findings:.
* 95% of the respondents were company directors or managers.
* 63% of respondents were from companies who employed more than 100 people.
* 40% of respondents worked for companies that turnover more than GBP100m per annum.
* 99.8% of respondents felt that R and D was important or very important to the construction industry.
* 55% of respondents believed Europe delivers currently the most R and D.
* 52% believed that the majority of R and D would come from Asia by 2020.
* 53% of respondents answered that CO2 issues require the most R and D.
* The internet and IT were seen as the top innovations to hit construction in the last 5 years.
* 85% of respondents felt that R and D is important or very important to their company.
* 39% of respondents said their company invested more than GBP25k per annum on R and D; 9.8% said they invested more than GBP1m per annum.
* 66% felt they should invest more.
* 100% of respondents felt that innovation is important for the future of construction.
