High-Density Modular Copper Cabling System
The AMP NETCONNECT Division of Tyco Electronics has introduced the Mini RJ21 Connector System, a high-density modular copper cabling system.
It is ideally suited to providing low-voltage power to remote devices such as VoIP telephones, WLAN access points and security devices.
Power over Ethernet (PoE) according to IEEE 802.3af defines the simultaneous provision of low-voltage (48 V DC) power and Ethernet data signals over a cabling system compliant to the ISO 11801:2002 standard.
With the AMP NETCONNECT midspan products, injecting the DC power onto existing copper cabling is as simple as routing patch cords to the device: data from the switch comes in and powered data comes out towards the patch panel.
The combination of power and data on the same cabling means that cost savings can be realised on initial installations and as new devices are added to the network because separate power outlets are not required at each device.
The benefits of the midspan power device include improved cost-effectiveness, since costs are not incurred for ports where power is not needed, and powered port management - since only the ports that need power need to be routed through the device.
The unit is designed for 19-inch rack mounting (1U high), and operates from an AC supply of 90-264 V, 47 to 63 Hz.
Hold-up time is 16 ms at all input voltages, and the power supply is fitted with thermal overload protection.
Additional port resettable fuses provide extra protection over normal, overload or short-circuit 802.af conditions.
Active power-factor correction meets the requirements of EN61000-3-2.
Options include a phantom power version, a power upgrade, and an SNMP (simple network management protocol) version.
