Terrapin secures a fast-track solution for prison
Terrapin's offsite building expertise has contributed to the fast-track expansion of HMP Wayland, a Category C training prison in Norfolk.
A combination of Terrapin's Unitrex and Prospex custodial modular systems is providing the prison with additional education and storage facilities, plus a new healthcare block combined with segregation accommodation.
Since opening in 1985, Wayland has been extended on several occasions to meet changing needs.
This latest expansion took just 20 weeks on site to complete using modern methods of construction, including Terrapin's advanced modular building technology.
Terrapin's experienced team worked with main contractor, Kier Eastern, to supply a purpose-designed solution for the Wayland project.
Kier Eastern's Contracts Manager, Richard Heyes, comments, "Terrapin delivered a complete design and offsite construction package, together with on site installation and internal and exterior finishing as required." Using offsite construction techniques accelerates build times and also ensures higher production accuracy as modules are built in a controlled factory environment.
Furthermore, the modular design of Terrapin's systems allows a high degree of flexibility in application.
Terrapin's Unitrex system was selected for a new storage building at HMP Wayland and a 74m x 24m education block - the largest two-storey structure to be designed and built using this system to date.
The Unitrex modular building system is pre-engineered offsite and then delivered in panelised 'flat pack' form for speedy erection and internal finishing on site.
For the second largest building, which provides the prison with new healthcare facilities and a secure segregation block, Terrapin designed a solution that would meet the needs of each area using a combination of Unitrex and Prospex - Terrapin's steel-framed modular building system.
Prospex modules are manufactured and assembled offsite to the client's specification and then craned into position.
All three new buildings at HMP Wayland are finished with a highly durable aggregate external treatment and have pitched timber truss roofs.
HMP Wayland is the latest in a series of permanent and temporary custodial building solutions provided by Terrapin, including immigration centres and new prison wings, canteens and activity facilities.
Terrapin's modular buildings offer a fast, secure, robust and flexible option that satisfies the required security standards and building regulations.
MandE works can be manufactured offsite into pre-assembled piperacks, reducing time and labour on site.
Modules can also be custom-engineered to incorporate features such as anti-vandal protection, data networks, air conditioning, rainwater harvesting and solar energy systems.
Terrapin is a privately owned company which has been expanding and promoting the potential of modern methods of offsite construction since the 1940s.
It grew with the development of modular classroom buildings throughout the baby boom and is now a leader in factory assembled building frames, panels and volumetric modules for projects such as hotels, prisons, hospitals, schools and apartments.
Terrapin is the first company to be accredited under Buildoffsite's new supplier registration scheme operated by Lloyd's Register.
The scheme standardises all aspects of the offsite process and ensures best practice, offering clients confidence in the assured levels of competence, methodology and safe working of the accredited supplier.
