The 2005 Civic Trust Awards - this year celebrating countryside and county town projects - are to be held in Brighton on Thursday 7 April The gala ceremony will be held at the Corn Exchange, part of the Brighton Dome, which won a CTA Commendation for restoration work in 2003

The Awards ceremony will be followed by the Annual Civic Trust Awards Conference on Friday 8 April at the Komedia Theatre, this year on the theme: Does the Built Environment encourage or deter anti-social behaviour? Since their launch in 1959, the Civic Trust Awards have been promoting the positive impact that development can have on quality of life.

Vivienne Newlands, Civic Trust Awards Manager notes that this argument is far from won: "The 2005 Award winners are outstanding".

"There is much good work that we look forward to celebrating in Brighton".

"However, in the 45th year of the Civic Trust Awards, there are still too many poor projects, out of context, created with little or no reference to the community they are for".

"Excellent projects exist".

"So why should some communities have to settle for less?" The Civic Trust Awards recognise projects which improve the built environment for everyone.

Projects can gain an Award, Commendation or Mention, and are judged not only on their contribution to the appearance of the environment but also on their benefit - cultural, social or economic - to the local community.

Judges examine context as well as design.
