Best build, renovations and public spaces Awards
The Civic Trust announce that 30 schemes from around the UK have won awards at a major ceremony in Newcastle.
The Civic Trust Awards originally attracted over 400 entrants, and the winners are projects that are recognised as culturally, socially or economically beneficial, and make an outstanding contribution to the quality and appearance of the environment.
Chair of the Civic Trust, Philip Kolvin said: "This year's winners include private houses and public spaces, museums, schools and public art.
We are proud that the Awards encompass such a wide range of schemes, and allow commercial developments to compete with community projects in providing better places for people".
The renovation of the Camden Roundhouse won the Civic Trust 'Access' Award, winning plaudits for its disabled accessibility, whilst the Royal Festival Hall on the South Bank in London won the 'NightVision' award for its contribution to the capitals' night time economy.
Judges described the transformation at the venue as delivering a "world class public space".
Other winners included The National Assembly for Wales which was described as a "striking addition to the local scene", whilst the new planetarium building and the refurbished Grade II* listed South Building at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich was cited as "Cleverly designed and well executed....".
The refurbishment of St George's Hall, Liverpool won the City of Culture Award, and was praised for the use of local skills.
"It is now stunning asset to the city", said assessors.
The Aggregate Industries Sustainability Award.
was won by the National Cold War Exhibition, RAF Museum Cosford, described by the Civic Trust as "a landmark structure that controls humidity using low energy conservation heating and natural ventilation".
Awards were along given to projects which represent the largest and the smallest entries in the country.
The massive 50 storey, 169m high Hilton Tower, Manchester, incorporates a 279 bedroom 4* Hilton hotel and 219 residential apartments.
The top floor penthouse is the highest living space in Britain.
Meanwhile, the tiny 'Atom', a new landmark in Wycoller Country Park, Pendle, which is just 3.5m high was also a winner.
It is described as both viewing point and shelter and also an intriguing and beautiful object in the landscape.
Bourbon Lane, Shepherd's Bush.
beat off stiff competition to win the category for the UK's best housing project, winning the English Partnerships Housing Award with assessors saying the scheme was "impeccably built".
Nottingham City Council.
received two awards for its remodelling of Old Market Square - praised for its "significant improvements".
The project won the Charcon Hard Landscaping category and the Waitrose CentreVision Award.
In a good year for local authority led entries, Sheffield City Council was one of a number of councils who tasted success.
It won the CABE Streets Award for 'The Gold Route'.
a pedestrian route through the city, linking the station, retail areas, business quarter and university campus.
Judges said this was "flamboyant and creatively designed".
A stunning renovation of a stately home and its grounds won the Partnerships Award for bringing various organisations together on a single project.
Wentworth Castle and Stainborough Park, Barnsley, Yorkshire, is said to be ""An outstanding example of partnership working, this scheme has saved and developed a superb Grade I listed building and surrounding estate".
Other awards winners include the Ivor Crewe lecture Hall, University of Essex at Colchester, described by Prince Charles * as a dustbin last month, renovation and new build at the Greenwich Observatory, the Richard Desmond Children's Eye Hospital at Moorfields, London, and the National Assembly for Wales.
