Flat Roofing Robust Details Corrected
Original 'Robust construction materials' details for flat roofing were technically incorrect.
When the then DTLR and the BRE published, early last year, a ring-bound volume 'Limiting thermal bridging and air leakage; Robust construction details for dwellings and similar buildings', few were aware that all the original details for flat roofing were technically incorrect They omitted the vital linking and sealing of the vapour control layer (VCL) to the waterproofing, which is necessary to encapsulate the warm roof insulation and also enhance the sealing of the building, and reduce the air leakage - all in line with the purpose and requirements of Part L1 of the Approved Documents for Building Regulations

Fast Track Pumped Industrial Floor Screeds
Cyril Potter, Chief Chemist at Ardex UK, discusses fast track pumped industrial floor screeds.
It fell to the Flat Roofing Alliance (FRA) to highlight these errors and redraw the ten details and then get the BRE to include them in a second print run.
Further pressure from the FRA was needed to ensure that these amendments were also made available free of charge to anyone who had bought the original version of the publication.
Those who obtained copies through the TSO (The Stationary Office) should have received the amendment pack automatically.
If they have not done so, they should contact TSO customer services on 0870 600 5522.
But it should be noted the second edition has changed its name to 'Robust Details', its ISBN number being 0117536121.
'We were obviously extremely concerned when we first discovered these serious errors', commented Paul Franklin, the FRA's technical officer.
'We as the leading trade body for flat roofing are constantly seeking to help specifiers achieve excellence in this sector of the industry and errors such as we have highlighted could have caused real problems'.
The Flat Roofing Alliance, was formed in 1997 when the Flat Roofing Contractors Advisory Board merged with the Association of British Roofing Felt Manufactures.
The FRA's principal aim is to promote the use of flat roofing generally and more specifically bituminous built up roofing.
It sets standards for products, specifications, safety and training and represents the flat roofing industry on the various committees of the BSI, CITB and through NSCC on the joint Contracts Tribunal.
The FRA publishes the highly regarded Roofing Handbook which is CPD certified.
