Thermalite Helps Build The Local Community
A new development in Ley Hill, Birmingham will provide 20 houses for the local authority. The development makes extensive use of Thermalite aircrete blocks for foundations of the timber frame houses.
Architects HGP, in conjunction with main contractors Mowlem PLC, specified Thermalite aircrete blocks specifically for the quality of finish and lightweight formulation of the products.
In total, over 7,000 m2 of Hi Strength 7 and Hi strength 7 Smooth Face blocks were used throughout the internal partition walls.
Hi Strength 7 blocks have been specifically developed to meet the requirements of a 7N/mm2 block and also have the advantage of being half the weight of other blocks of equal compressive strength.
The scale of the development demanded the construction process to be carried out quickly and efficiently, therefore reducing the build time was a high priority.
The extremely lightweight formulation of Hi Strength 7 makes the blocks easier to handle, thus speeding up the actual build process, whilst still meeting the manual handling guidelines set out by the HSE.
This inner leaf of Smooth Face provides excellent thermal protection and fire resistance, complying with all mandatory planning and Building Regulation requirements.
The product is a paint grade block with clean lines, even surfaces and neat sharp arrises, making it suitable for direct painting.
Joe Griffith, of HGP Architects commented: "A large development such as the Leyton Mills project, greatly benefited from the time savings that were made possible through the use of Thermalite products.
The excellent quality finish that the Smooth Face product guaranteed made it suitable for direct painting.
Therefore, it was an ideal choice for the construction of the commercial buildings.".
