Thermalite aircrete blocks specifically for their excellent environmental credentials in the construction of the brand new European Headquarters of the Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC).

The brand new European Headquarters of the Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC), situated on the historic 45 acre Royal Pavilion woodland site in Hampshire, has recently been constructed whilst still respecting the natural beauty and heritage of its surrounding area The site, extensively covered by woodland trees, was subject to a blanket tree preservation order, which only authorised a certain number of trees to be removed

Architects RTKL, provided a unique design to help preserve the trees, that sees the CSC Headquarters split into four sections, incorporating the trees in between each office block.

Due to the environmental profile of the development, main contractors Mowlem Major and Special Projects specified Thermalite aircrete blocks specifically for their excellent environmental credentials.

In total, 2,000m2 of Hi strength 7 Smooth Face blocks were used throughout the internal leaf of the external walls and the internal partition walls of the new CSC Headquarters.

Hi Strength 7 blocks have been specifically developed to meet the loading requirements of 7N/mm2 and have the advantage of being half the weight of other blocks of equal compressive strength.

The extremely lightweight formulation makes the blocks easier to handle, thus speeding up the actual build process, as well a making it an ideal choice for offices and other buildings more than two storeys high.

Thermalite is made from up to 80% recycled material and is energy saving in its production and use, all of which contribute towards a positive environmental profile.

As the only aircrete producer to be awarded the coveted Environmental Standard, ISO 14001, Thermalite is one manufacturer confident of the sustainability of its products Mr Bond, Procurement Manager for Mowlem commented: "Due to the extensive woodlands on the site, environmental issues were very high on our agenda.

We wanted to ensure that all products specified for the development were environmentally friendly and the sustainability and excellent environmental credentials of Thermalite products made them an ideal choice for this development.".
