Asda built with Thermalite aircrete blocks
The 23 acre Asda Superstore site including 85,000 sqft of non-food and leisure outlets has made extensive use of Thermalite aircrete blocks.
The recent development of the Tesco Store in Somerset, constructed using the TJM system by Mowlems Ltd, has made extensive use of Thermaltie's aircrete blocks, specified purposely for their lightweight formulation.
At less than 20kg, the blocks are easy to handle and coupled with thin joint mortar, the actual build process is more than halved.
A total of 720m2 of Thermalite Hi Strength 7 was specified for the supermarket development.
Andy Friendship, Site Manager at the Ernest Ireland division of Mowlem chose to use Thermalite's TJM system to speed up the build process of the development.
Friendship commented: "The TJM system offered quick drying properties, reducing the depth of the mortar used in construction, which more than halved the time taken to build the Superstore.
TJM is not a system previously used by Ernest Ireland or a technique utilised in the construction of any Tesco stores.
"After consultations with Thermalite's Business Development Manager, it was clear that with the use of Thermalite's lightweight blocks and thin joint mortar, the store could be constructed twice as fast as that built with aggregate blocks and traditional mortar." TJM allows the depth of the mortar to be reduced from 10mm to 3mm or less, reducing the time taken for mortar to go off and to construct buildings.
The speed of construction can be further enhanced by 13.5% when using Thermalite Large Format blocks, which have a face size equivalent to two traditional concrete blocks.
