Asda built with Thermalite aircrete blocks
The 23 acre Asda Superstore site including 85,000 sqft of non-food and leisure outlets has made extensive use of Thermalite aircrete blocks.
The foundations of the development, constructed by main contractors Mowlem PLC, were built using 466m2 of Thermalite's innovative Tongue and Groove Trenchblock in 300mm, specified specifically for its excellent structural qualities.
Designed for speed, the joints of Thermalite's Tongue and Groove blocks easily slot together in one simple process.
By joining the blocks together in this way, the perp-ends do not need to be mortared providing a much quicker method of construction.
Standard Trenchblock construction has already been proven to halve build-time but with Thermalite's Tongue and Groove blocks, house-builders will gain a further 25% time saving.
At less than 25kg, Trenchblock is already a one-man lift but Thermalite's lightweight product features integral hand holes for easy lifting, ensuring it clearly meets Health and Safety recommendations.
The addition of hand holes also makes the process of lifting and laying the blocks much quicker and easier.
Andy Brindly, Project Architect for Birmingham City Council commented: "Thermalite's Tongue and Groove Trenchblocks reduced the build time of the Ley Hill development considerably and therefore, due to the time saved on labour, significant cost savings were made.
"The use of Thermalite's Tongue and Groove blocks enabled large expanses of foundations to be achieved in a very short time, which contributed considerably to improved productivity on site.".
