Asda built with Thermalite aircrete blocks
The 23 acre Asda Superstore site including 85,000 sqft of non-food and leisure outlets has made extensive use of Thermalite aircrete blocks.
The thin joint system allows the depth of the mortar to be reduced from 10mm to 3mm or less, resulting in faster application and improved productivity, particularly when on long runs of walling.
Independent speed trials have proven that a wall consisting of Thermalite blocks and thin layer mortar can be laid twice as fast as those built with aggregate blocks and traditional mortar.
Thin joint mortar also dries far more rapidly than traditional mortar, another productivity gain, as it allows construction heights to be built without long waits for the mortar to set.
As thin joint masonry relies on high tolerance block dimensions, a greater accuracy of buildings can be achieved, enabling the next phase of the project to begin.
Furthermore, site wastage is dramatically reduced, making the system a sound environmental choice.
By providing these benefits, the thin joint system complies with new Government recommendations for future build processes, representing one of the few on-site systems that qualifies as a Method of Modern Construction.
