SCI (Steel Construction Institute), is leading one of eight work packages in a major project to promote offsite production applications (prOSPa).

The aim of prOSPa is to drive change to enable industry to implement and realise the potential of off site production The programme brings together a wide range of materials, technologies, and sectors of construction in a concerted effort to initiate, promote and disseminate opportunities for and the benefits of off site production (OSP)

It will build on the considerable portfolio of work already undertaken in this area, making existing results more accessible.

New work within the programme will focus on activities to address directly the barriers, both real and perceived, to increased use of OSP by clients, designers, contractors, the supply chain and statutory/financial bodies in the construction industry.

The SCI is leading work package five, which involves the production of case studies on innovative projects using off site production.

The purpose of these studies is to complement other parts of the prOSPa initiative as a means of overcoming barriers and raising awareness of what can be achieved.

It is hoped to produce a total of ten new case studies, which will cover a variety of off site production applications using a range of materials.

These will be available by November 2004.

If you are involved in a project that could be considered for a case study please contact Andrew Way, SCI, a.way@steel-sci.com.

The prOSPa consortium is composed of Co-Construct members (BSRIA, CIRIA, The Concrete Society, The Steel Construction Institute and TRADA Technology) and Loughborough University.

CIRIA is responsible for the overall programme management.

prOSPa is part-funded by the DTI through its Partners in Innovation programmes initiative, with additional cash and in-kind contributions from the consortium partners and industry.

The total programme value for three years will be over 1.8 million.
