An Accsys Technologies product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Feb 23, 2010

Accsys and Coillte Panel Products is unveiling the Medite Tricoya panel at Ecobuild 2010, the first trial panel in the wood composites industry.

Accsys and Medite Europe, manufacturer of MDF, have joined forces to create Medite Tricoya.

The collaboration has combined expertise to develop this economically viable, non-toxic and stable medium density fibreboard (MDF) panel made from acetylated wood fibres.

This ongoing development is the beginning of highly durable and stable fibreboard panels which, like Accoya wood, will transform the way panel products are used in outdoor applications.

The Accsys products, Accoya wood and Tricoya, meet the market demands for higher performance sustainable wood products.

Accoya wood is a non-toxic modified high technology wood made from sustainably sourced, fast growing wood species.

It is highly durable and dimensionally stable and produced by the acetylation of softwood.

Acetylation has been known for more than 75 years but Accsys has developed the product to a commercial scale.

Accsys has obtained significant Intellectual Property in the form of patents and expertise, with 12 patents granted and nine patent applications covering 67 countries.

The most obvious market for Accoya wood is high value volume applications for outdoor use requiring durability, dimensional stability and quality appearance, such as windows, doors, veneers, recreational products, cladding and marine use.

Other applications that are being developed by the company include structural timbers for bridges and buildings.

Accoya wood is helping protect the world's precious hardwood resources.

It is guaranteed for 50 years in any exterior application and 25 years when used in the ground.

The long life of Accoya wood helps to reduce carbon emissions, creating sustainable possibilities in both solid wood and panel applications.

Accoya wood has gained recognition as a Gold standard product under the Cradle to CradleSM (C2C) Certification scheme.

Accoya wood offers improved durability of up to Class 1; dimensional stability with 75 per cent less swelling or shrinkage compared to untreated wood when used in climate exposed conditions; full retention of the source wood's strength or hardness; and is a non-toxic and 100 per cent recyclable alternative to treated woods, plastics, metals or composite materials.

Tricoya acetylation technology for wood elements, including chips, fibres and particles, has been pioneered by Accsys Technologies.

Accsys has successfully developed and commercialised Accoya acetylated solid wood.

The application of Tricoya technology to the acetylation of wood ingredients for use in a wide range of wood composite end products, is set to create new, high performance options and open up new markets for manufacturers.

Tricoya wood-based panels offer durabilty; is suitable for outdoor use or wet environments; dimensional stability: swelling and shrinkage is dramatically reduced; sustainably sourced using certified, reclaimed or recycled timber; environmental compatibility; is non-toxic and recyclable; and offers an effective barrier to fungal decay.

Accoya wood has been used in a wide range of applications, and has superb potential in structural applications.

Accoya wood can be used to replace traditional construction materials such as steel.

In December 2006, Accoya wood was chosen as the main construction material for two heavy traffic road bridges across the A7 at the city of Sneek in the Netherlands.

The bridges each measure 20m high by 40m long.

Accoya wood has been laminated into large sections measuring 1,080x1,400mm to create an innovative structure.
