Timber frame construction now accounts for almost 17% of the new homes market, according to market statistics reported at the recent AGM for the UK Timber Frame Association (UKTFA).

Bryan Woodley, chief executive of the UKTFA gave members an early preview of market statistics for 2004 compiled by the Association, which represents over 85% of all timber frame manufacturers in the UK.

He said: "Full market statistics will be published shortly, but I can confirm that we have met our targets with another full percentage point increase in market share for timber frame housing".

"While traditional masonry methods of housebuilding are in decline, timber frame has again risen in popularity".

"We now have 16.7% of the new homes market in the UK, compared to 15.7% in 2003".

"One in six new homes is now timber frame".

"This is double the market share we had in 1998." Bryan Woodley reported back the results of research among the leading housebuilders which indicated that the majority perceive there is no longer any customer resistance to timber frame homes.

He also reviewed the key activities of the UKTFA over the last year.

These included the first pilots in Scotland of an innovative erector training initiative, run by UKTFA in collaboration with City and Guilds, which delivers the highest level of qualification anywhere in Europe for timber frame erectors.

The AGM voted three new members to the UKTFA's Board of Directors.

They are David Parker ( marketing director, Torwood Homes ), David Flemming ( technical director, Walker Timber ) and Joe Mortoccia (sales and marketing director, Potton ).
