Exciting activities and events will celebrate one hundred years of IStructE and the vital contribution structural engineers make to society and the built environment.

The Institution of Structural Engineers' (IStructE) celebrates its 100th birthday on 21 July 2008 Starting from 4 October 2007, exciting activities and events will celebrate one hundred years of IStructE and the vital contribution structural engineers make to society and the built environment

IStructE's Centenary year starts on 4 October 2007 with the inauguration of the 88th and first ever female President, Sarah Buck of BSW Consulting Exeter.

Sarah will lead the Institution through its Centenary year as it celebrates its heritage, members and the vital contribution structural engineers make to society and the built environment.

The actual Centenary anniversary on 21 July 2008 will be marked with a council meeting at the Ritz Hotel in London that replicates the very first meeting when the Institution was formed on 21 July 1908, as the Concrete Institute.

Stimulating activities and events will take place throughout IStructE's Centenary year and will include a Centenary Conference, a display at the Victoria and Albert Museum, a Schools Challenge and special Centenary lectures.

There will also be regional events taking place all over the world, organised by IStructE's local branches, making this perhaps the largest coordinated drive to raise the profile of the structural engineering profession that has ever taken place.

IStructE has also commissioned the artist Stephen Wiltshire, who specialises in drawing intricate cityscapes, to design a special panorama for the Centenary featuring iconic structures from around the world, all built since the Institution's formation in 1908.

This will feature on a range of merchandise which will be available from October 2007.

Sarah Buck, IStructE President for 2007/08, remarked: 'This is an important milestone for IStructE.

As we celebrate the first 100 years of the Institution we also look forward to the next 100 years.

It is my vision that IStructE be as relevant now as it was when it was first established, and that it continues to represent and champion its members and the structural engineering profession.' Dr Keith Eaton, Chief Executive of IStructE, commented: 'The Centenary session will be an exciting time for the Institution.
