Buro Happold and Engineers Haskins Robinson Waters received top award for the ground-breaking design of the Savill Building at the Structural Awards 2007.

The project initially won the Award for Arts, Leisure and Entertainment Structures, sponsored by Griffiths and Armour, for its innovative and unique structural design, incorporating a floating timber roof It was then selected from twelve category winners as being the most outstanding example of structural engineering for 2007 and awarded the Supreme Award for Structural Engineering Excellence

The striking roof design of the Savill Building, the new visitor centre for Windsor Great Park, builds on previous experience of timber gridshell design to produce a spectacular yet graceful roof floating above the building's delicate glass facade.

The Awards' judges commented: 'The whole design process was one of collaboration and discussion.

The outcome is a beautiful building that has significantly exceeded the client's expectations, and generated much interest due to its architectural form, choice of local and sustainable materials and the beauty of the expressed structure itself".

Over 400 guests attended the Structural Awards 2007 dinner and ceremony, which took place on Wednesday 14 November in the stunning art deco setting of Lawrence Hall in London.

Organised annually by Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), the Awards aim to recognise excellence in structural design and showcase projects that lead the industry's development.

Established in 1968, the Awards celebrate their 40th anniversary in 2008, which coincides with IStructE's Centenary year.

Reflecting the truly international scope of the Awards, projects from across Europe, North America and Asia received awards in twelve different categories including: Dresden Railway Station (Germany) in the Heritage Award for Infrastructure category, the Library of Parliament (Canada) in the Heritage Award for Buildings category, and Teaching and Research Complex at Tongji University (China) in the Award for Education or Healthcare Structures category.

Sarah Buck, President of IStructE, remarked: '2007 has been a landmark year for the Structural Awards with a record 151 entries, the sheer diversity of which demonstrates the innovation and creativity that epitomises structural engineering.

The Awards serve as an industry benchmark, and it is an outstanding achievement for a project to be shortlisted in any of the award categories.'.
