TRADA, the Timber Research and Development Association has opened up the core technical information on its askTRADA website (www.asktrada.co.uk) to non-members.

To date more than 1,200 registrations in this new 'Level 2' category have been received from architects, engineers and other professionals, including many leading names in the industry Registered users will have access to most of TRADA's [JJV1] technical publications and research reports that can be viewed in HTML format

Many of the reports and publications include detailed drawings and photographs.

The timber species database listing the properties and characteristics of more than 100 hardwoods and softwoods available in the UK is one of the most popular features of the website.

The species database can be accessed directly from the home page and users can search by name or use, durability, density, colour, availability or price.

As TRADA Chief Executive Andrew Abbott commented, the decision to offer free access follows extensive market research and brings TRADA in step with rival products.

'The steel and concrete industries offer free information, so it is important that the timber industry maintains pace and does the same.' Peter Clegg of Feilden Clegg Bradley Architects, a TRADA member for many years, said that he and his colleagues had found the new website 'invaluable' as a single source of technical information about the use of timber and wood products in building, both structurally and aesthetically.

'There are many suppliers' websites available to us, but they tend to centre on specific products.

AskTRADA provides excellent technical information, based on years of research, on everything you need to know about timber generally.' To ensure that the askTRADA website will cope with the anticipated huge increase in site traffic, it has undergone 'significant redevelopment', said Andrew Abbott.

'We are offering a greatly enhanced askTRADA, with more intuitive search and navigation facilities for 2004 and further plans include the addition of a photo library, with case studies to follow in the months ahead.' The backbone of the knowledge resource is TRADA's research, he stressed.

'We will continue to apply membership income and Government or industry funding to a rolling programme of practical projects, to enhance the information available.' To become a registered user (Level 2) of askTRADA visit www.asktrada.co.uk and log in with your email address and a password of your choice.
