Recycling historic buildings: TRADA at the Globe

A Timber Research and Development Association product story
Edited by the Buildingtalk editorial team Sep 9, 2008

'Recycling Historic Buildings' seminar, organised by the Timber Research and Development Association will include challenges that restoring a historic building can unearth and their solutions.

The exquisite Globe Theatre in London is the venue for the next 'Recycling Historic Buildings' seminar, to be organised by TRADA, the Timber Research and Development Association, on Wednesday 5th November 2008.

The day's programme - including a guided tour of the Globe - will present some of the challenges that restoring a historic building can unearth and their solutions.

Dr John Williams, Business Development Manager of the Site-based Services Department of TRADA Technology said, 'We aim to give practical advice, to help project managers avoid delay to the critical path of developments and to give delegates an understanding of how significant cost savings can be achieved, for example by keeping interventions to a minimum and reusing materials wherever possible'.

Re-using wood ensures that carbon remains locked up in the wood and negates the impact on climate change.

Dr Williams will give a talk on Assessing the condition and strength of historic timber using non-destructive techniques.

His fellow speakers are:.

- Alasdair Beal of Thomasons Civil, Structural and Consulting Engineers, on 'Structural refurbishment'.

- Dr Ian Sims and Paul Bennett-Hughes of specialist engineering, materials and environmental consultants STATS on 'It's not just bricks and mortar.

The importance of assessing the structural fabric of historic buildings'.

- Peter Barker, Senior Technical Consultant, Chiltern International Fire on 'Fire safety challenges and solutions for historic buildings' .

The event is aimed at developers, local authority conservation officers, architects, structural engineers, heritage consultants and specialist contractors.

The delegate fee is GBP150.00 + VAT for TRADA members and GBP195 + VAT for non-members.
