TRemco illbruck flooring system at cruise treminal
Southampton City Cruise Terminal GBP9 million refurbishment and expansion programme included carpets and contract vinyl materials from the range of Tremco illbruck.
The opening of the new Southampton City Cruise Terminal earlier this year followed an GBP9 million refurbishment and expansion programme that has included the installation of more than 4000 square metres of carpets and contract vinyl materials, mainly employing DPMs and other products from the range of Tremco illbruck.
Beveridge Flooring from Fareham in Hampshire, who have been trading for 28 years and employ a team of 14-18 fitters, were the chosen flooring contractor for this prestigious project and Warings Contractors Limited were the main contractors.
Beveridge Flooring chose to utilise Tremco illbruck's products on the basis of its positive past experiences and the very tight timetable set for completing the fit-out.
The Contracts Manager/Director for Beveridge Flooring, Richard Hawkins, explains: "Although the terminal was closed during the contract, the individual areas had to be dealt with to a very strict timetable, while the work was made more difficult by the generally poor condition of the existing floors.
Much of the concrete slab had never had any type of covering on it while in other places we had to scrape or burn off paint residues or adhesive.
This led to a lot of making good and filling.
"We changed the specification to the Tremco illbruck system based on their proven track record.
We knew they would deliver excellent products that are easy to work with, and provide an excellent level of back-up service." The very high moisture readings measured in the existing sub-floor areas were dealt with by utilising Tremco illbruck's fluid applied Treadfast One Coat Universal damp proof membrane.
This product is very easy to apply to a controlled thickness and cures rapidly to form a permanent barrier between the sub-floor and the finishes.
It can be applied across surfaces having a measured moisture content of up to 97 per cent relative humidity The areas of power floated concrete within the cruise terminal were treated with a coating of Treadfast Epoxyprime over the top of the cured Treadfast One Coat Universal before the surface was smoothed with Treadfast Unismooth.
Where slabs covered with a sand cement screed were addressed, however, the specification switched to employing Treadfast Unitex which offers excellent adhesion to a range of surfaces and requires no additional primer.
The preparations were followed by the installation of some 1500 square metres of Flotex carpet as well as 1800 square metres of JHS Formal carpet and another 500 square metres of Altro Maxis safety flooring for the washrooms.
The JHS Format carpet was chosen for the check-in and waiting areas, while the Flotex was laid around the walkways and viewing galleries.
