Eurocode 6 guidance published
The Concrete Centre and the Modern Masonry Alliance have jointly published a series of three guides entitled How to design masonry structures using Eurocode 6
The guides draw together in one place the key information and commentary required for the design of typical masonry elements to Eurocode 6 Firstly, the Introduction to Eurocode 6 provides an outline of the scope of Eurocode 6

The Concrete Centre welcomed publication of government's Green Paper on Housing, but has cautioned them to think through its strategy and avoid short term fixes.
Warning about non-residential sustainable code
The Concrete Centre has warned that any commercial sustainable code must include long-term sustainabiilty.
In particular, it gives an introduction to design and assessment of actions using Eurocode 6 and also covers the specification and workmanship of masonry.
The second guide, Vertical resistance, explains how to design for vertical actions and highlights how Eurocode 6 introduces some new concepts, namely how the compressive strength of masonry units is expressed and how masonry units are grouped and treated.
The third guide, Lateral resistance, covers the design of laterally loaded masonry panels.
It examines the two approaches to the design of laterally loaded panels that are offered by Eurocode 6.
The first method relies on the flexural strength of the masonry and makes use of yield line analysis to provide bending moment coefficients.
The second method is based on arching and the assumption of a three-pinned arch being formed within the wall.
Further information on Eurocode 6 may be found on a dedicated website: www.eurocode6.org.
Commenting on the publication of the new guides, Martin Clarke, chairman of the Modern Masonry Alliance, said: "The introduction of the Eurocodes to the UK construction industry is a major event".
"These guides aim to make the transition to Eurocode 6 Design of Masonry Structures as easy as possible by providing in one place all the necessary information and commentary".
"This series of How to guides for Eurocode 6 complements the series that The Concrete Centre has published for Eurocode 2 which have been very well received by the industry", reported Andrew Minson, head of structures at The Concrete Centre.
"The current British Standards are due to be withdrawn in March 2010 and so we welcome this opportunity to work with the Modern Masonry Alliance in providing guidance that will help the UK construction industry quickly and efficiently adopt and use Eurocode 6".
