Warning about non-residential sustainable code
The Concrete Centre has warned that any commercial sustainable code must include long-term sustainabiilty.
"Using its thermal efficiency can reduce the need for heating and air conditioning requirements whilst its built-in fire resistance, sound insulation and vibration resisting qualities avoids the need to specify additional building materials." In addition, its robustness and flood resilience will protect against the predicted impacts of climate change and its long-term performance means that little or maintenance will be required during the building's lifetime.
A further plus is concrete's ability to be recycled when the building finally comes to its end of life.
