A Robert Gordon University product story

The Scott Sutherland School Degree Show will feature an impressive design for a sustainable timber apartment in Old Aberdeen.

An architecture student from The Robert Gordon University will exhibit her impressive design for a sustainable timber apartment in Old Aberdeen at this year's Scott Sutherland School Degree Show which launches on Friday.

Chin Khon Ket (23) from Sabah, Malaysia designed the building as part of a series of sustainable timber apartments to be situated behind the surrounding plot of Old Town House in Old Aberdeen.

These timber apartments are environmentally friendly and are designed to have as low an impact on the surroundings and society as possible.

The vertical untreated oak cladding is light and gives a sense of individuality in comparison to the greyish-granite surrounding.

The long, narrow plan allows all the available daylight to be captured through the south-facing, fully glazed balcony doors into the living room.

The longer south-facing side will also have passive solar heating to reduce energy consumption.

The environmental essence of these timber apartments is the double-stud system for wall and roof construction.

These prevent the cold bridging through structural elements and maximise insulation between the wall and roof systems.

This ensures the apartments are 'super-insulated' and effectively reduces the need for heating.

The Show at The Scott Sutherland School and the Built Environment is open to the public from 10am till 4pm daily from 16 - 19 June, the same day as the Gray's School of Art Degree Show, which sees RGU's Garthdee campus transform into a hub of creativity.

On show will be the work of graduating students from architecture, surveying, construction design and management and architectural technology.

Work from across the disciplines will be displayed throughout the School including projections, displays of schemes for the Aberdeen Civic Medal, a design competition sponsored by the city, computer generated visualisation, photographic exhibitions and study trip images.

David McClean, Head of the Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment, said, 'The Show will exhibit an exciting array of events which reflect the broad spectrum of activities undertaken within the School and will help to further position us as an internationally regarded professional institution.
