New Tensar Cost Saving Suds Solutions

A Tensar International product story

Tensar International and its Netlon subsidiary are implementing a series of cost saving ground engineering solutions for Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) based on its expertise in soil reinforcement, ground stabilisation and erosion control.

Tensar has produced a brochure outlining its high performance products and the applications they offer to improve surface water infiltration and reduce the harmful impact that water runoff has on the environment.

One key Tensar solution uses porous surfacing and permeable paving systems as an important technique in source control at the earliest stage.

Tensar geogrids and geocomposites reinforce the porous aggregate sub-base layer protecting and reducing stress on the subgrade where its strength is reduced by the infiltrating water.

The geogrid solutions used are designed to reduce the required sub-base depth by up to 40%, contributing to sustainability by reducing excavation depths, aggregate requirements and overall cost.

With the increased use of hard, impermeable surfaces within the construction industry over the last century, more and more organisations are addressing the SUDS issue.

The Highways Agency is developing a research program and new drainage systems to reduce the impact of highway runoff on the environment.

The government is encouraging the inclusion of SUDS systems in new development programs through new legislation and guidance policies and planning policies now actively discourage development within flood plains unless flood mitigation measures are included in the plans.

Successful SUDS solutions are dependant on correct design, installation and maintenance of a range of complimentary components and an integrated approach is advised rather than the specification of individual components.

The Tensar Design Service team recognise this and are on hand to select the optimum solution for individual projects.

The SUDS solutions developed by Tensar International are outlined in their new brochure, "Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems - a guide to the products and applications".
