Phil Simcock of consultants BDP, Manchester, commented: "Following demolition and site preparation, we were faced with a lead time of less than 10 weeks to get reinforced concrete walls, designed, specified and started on site.
"In a tight race to finish this phase before the 2006 John Smith Grand National, this was unacceptable.
As an alternative, we investigated a Tensar Wall solution which was completely installed on site within 8 weeks, and available for use immediately.
Tensar's rapid turn around of the specification, excellent technical support and the construction time saved ensured savings on the contract." The TWS solution comprises a dry laid wall of Tensar concrete blocks, 70 metres long and between 2 and 4 metres high.
The fill behind the wall is completed with imported granular material stabilised by layers of Tensar uniaxial RE geogrid.
The geogrid is connected to the blocks with Tensar's unique polymer key, so that the whole provides an integrated load bearing structure.
As the outer face of the wall is to be faced with brick to match the other structures on site, stainless steel ties are incorporated into the Tensar wall construction to act as links to the cladding wall.
Tensar's retaining Wall System has British Board of Agrement (BBA) certification.
Blocks and geogrid rolls are all designed for manual lifting.
