RoRo ramp pavement repair uses Tensar Technology

Incorporating Tensar Glasstex reinforcement at RoRo vehicle ramp at ABP Port of Ipswich provided protection from further deterioration, as a cost effective alternative to replacing the ramp.

The No.1 Roll On Roll Off vehicle ramp at Associated British Ports' (ABP) Port of Ipswich, used by the regular Ipswich-Ostend ferry service, was constructed over 30 years ago using concrete, and gradual settlement had resulted in cracking and deformation of its surface.

By incorporating Tensar Glasstex reinforcement when installing a new, reinforced asphalt overlay, the ramp was protected from further deterioration, as a cost effective alternative to replacing the ramp.

The 200mm concrete pavement was constructed in 1973 but had been affected by general soil settlement behind the sheet piled dock wall, exacerbated by the trafficking of heavy goods vehicles.

The pavement needed strengthening, and the final surface had to ensure improved running for vehicles while resisting reflective cracking through the new asphalt surface.

After sealing up the cracks in the concrete and spraying with bitumen binder coat, the Glasstex reinforcing layer was machine laid directly on to the concrete slab by specialist installer, Foster Contracting.

This was followed by a 45mm thick hot rolled asphalt overlay, which was laid on top by Waveney Asphalt using a conventional paver.

As a result, a rapid economical repair of the ramp was completed which improves its performance and protects against further surface deterioration.
