Southampton waterfront development appointment
Developer Kilmartin Group appoint Terence O'Rourke to shape plans for the future of Southampton's Royal Pier waterfront as part of a major regeneration project.
Southampton City Council, in conjunction with Associated British Ports and Crown Estates, aims to make the area the key waterfront destination for residents and visitors, connecting the city to the water via a redesigned public park.
The site includes Royal Pier, which was first opened in 1833, and neighbouring Mayflower Park.
The plans will also safeguard the future of the annual Southampton Boat Show which attracts around 122,000 visitors every year.
Terence O'Rourke will produce the scheme's master plan and environmental statement.
The practice is providing an integrated team of planners, urban designers, landscape architects and architects.
Their work will include consultation and market testing, culminating in the submission of an outline planning application to Southampton City Council in 2011.
Early ideas for the area include specialist and local retail, office space, residential properties, hotel and leisure facilities.
Director Gary Coulson, who is leading the Terence O'Rourke team, said: "We will be involved in all aspects of the design and planning processes.
"Reconnecting Southampton with its waterfront is a central design principle, creating new visual and physical linkages from the waterfront to the city centre.
It's what the city deserves.
