Totty Construction has secured a GBP 5.5 million contract from Wigan and Leigh College to refurbish two buildings on its Wigan campus.

Totty Construction has secured a GBP 5.5 million contract from Wigan and Leigh College to refurbish two buildings on its Wigan campus, creating a new home for the Wigan School for the Arts The Parsons Walk and Linacre Buildings are the subject of the refurbishment, with the latter housing the new School for the Arts - bringing together over 600 students and 40 staff to Wigan town centre

Carried out in two simultaneous phases, the northern-based main contractor will commence work on the refurbishment of the four-storey Linacre building, and the seven-storey Parsons Walk building in May.

At Linacre, Totty will completely strip out and refurbish the entire building, which has stood vacant for some 18-months.

Work will include replacement of the building's mechanical and electrical (M and E) systems, installation of a new lift and improvements to the entrance area to enhance accessibility for students and staff.

Once refurbished, the new Wigan School for the Arts will feature state-of-the-art facilities, including dance, television and recording studios, ceramic and sculpture workshops, purpose-built design studios, photographic darkrooms and Apple Mac and IT suites.

A 180-seat theatre, bistro and public art exhibition space will complete the impressive facilities.

Totty Construction's remit at the Parsons Walk building involves the refurbishment of the three-storey entrance block, to create a new entrance on the ground floor, general refurbishment of the north block and the installation of a new lift.

The building will remain operational during the refurbishment phase, with a number of teaching departments relocating as Totty carries out work in this live operational environment.

John Gittins, managing director of Totty Construction's public sector division, commented: "With education proving a particularly buoyant market sector, Totty Construction continues to secure high profile projects across the full spectrum of education bodies in northern England".

"With an enviable track record of delivering high quality contracting solutions for schools, colleges and universities, the company is ideally placed to make further inroads into this dynamic sector." Jim Crewdson, College Principal, explains, "The formation of the Wigan School for the Arts is a momentous occasion for Wigan and Leigh College and forms part of our GBP 30 million redevelopment scheme".

"Many students, including the rock band Star Sailor, have already emerged from our existing facilities to blaze a trail for performance, art, design and the creative industries".

"This move will place our students and staff at the centre of the Borough's creative map.".
