Totty Construction has secured a GBP4 million contract from West Fire andYorkshire Rescue Service to build a new state-of-the-art fire station in Bradford.

Totty Construction has secured a GBP4 million contract from West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service to build a new state-of-the-art fire station in Bradford Replacing the Service's existing facility in the city centre, the new station, on Leeds Road, has a superior location on a major arterial road, which will further enhance the brigade's overall efficiency with improved access to major road networks

The new three-storey, steel frame structure is due for completion in Autumn 2006 and will feature a curved metallic roof with a brickwork facade.

A key feature of the development will be the construction of five large internal bays with automatic roller doors to house the service's fleet of fire appliances.

A wash down area will be constructed externally to ensure the appliances are well maintained, with Totty also creating a large parking area for staff and visitors as well as hard and soft landscaping features.

The high specification station will feature a large community room on the ground floor, which will be used as a dedicated resource to provide members of the public with information on fire safety, as well as acting as a central information and liaison point.

This floor also houses a number of administrative offices, kit drying room and gym.

The first floor contains the primary accommodation space with four individual sleeping areas and a large canteen and kitchen, along with a lecture theatre and recreation room.

The second floor comprises further office space.

A full range of training facilities will also be built on site to ensure the fire brigade is equipped to tackle a comprehensive range of hazards.

Totty Construction will build a three-storey training tower to the rear of the new station, which will prove a valuable resource for simulated rescues.

John Gittins, managing director of Totty Construction's public sector division, explained: "Working closely with West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, Totty Construction has developed a high specification building that fulfils the clients needs and requirements for many years to come and will prove a vital resource within the Bradford area".

"The company has an enviable record of working in partnership with regional public sector organisations to successfully deliver key note schemes on time and within budget." Phil Toase, Chief Fire Officer for West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, added: "We welcome the commencement of the construction work for West Yorkshire's new fire station in Bradford".

"The position of the new station will be of great benefit to the communities in Bradford".

"It's placed right at the heart of an area that we deem to be high risk and through use of the community room and liaison within the local area, we hope to reduce this risk whilst remaining well-placed to respond to emergency calls".

"The new fire station will provide our firefighters with a modern environment with facilities suited to their operational needs, whilst providing facilities and opportunities for the needs of the local community, such as the community room".

Chairman for West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Authority, Gordon Beever commented, "The authority is pleased that progress has been made on the Bradford fire station project".

"With the work beginning at the end of September, firefighters and members of the public will get to see all the planning begin to come to life".

"I'm sure the new station will be very beneficial to the community of Bradford." -.
