Barry Walker has been presented with an award by ASIS International, the world's largest security professional organisation, in recognition of his efforts and achievements in advancing the CPP (Certified Protection Professional) qualification in the UK.
"Such commitment to the CPP deserves the highest recognition" The Regional CPP Recognition Award was presented to Barry, a Senior Security Advisor with TPS Consult, part of business and construction services company Carillion plc, in New Orleans in September.
It recognises his efforts in leading the UK CPP team in introducing highly effective new innovations in the study programme which has resulted in the UK achieving an average pass rate of 85 per cent, the highest in the whole of ASIS International worldwide.
ASIS International, which was originally founded in 1955 as the American Society for Industrial Security, now has more than 33,000 members worldwide.
The UK Chapter is the largest outside the USA, with nearly 700 members.
To be eligible to take the CPP examination, candidates must have at least nine years' experience in the industry, including three in security management.
CPPs must also re-certify every three years if they wish to retain their designation.
Barry Walker has been the UK CPP representative, and leads a team of three in organising the study programmes in the UK.
They give up personal time to prepare study sessions and guidance notes, carry out instruction and even select study venues.
The team was conscious of the need to encourage professionals to become CPP certified, regardless of gender, nationality or race.
The successful class of 2002 included only the second woman in the UK to qualify, and also two members from Italy that had recognised the value of the UK's study programme.
The award citation reads: "Such commitment to the CPP deserves the highest recognition.
It has raised the profile of this important qualification in the region (Europe) and has consolidated the reputation of ASIS International, and Chapter 208 (UK) in particular, as the premier organisation for security professionals." Barry's efforts demonstrate his professionalism in the security design and consultancy industry.
As a key member of the team at TPS Consult, he contributed to the company being winner of the "Best Security Consultant" category in the SMT Security Excellence Awards in November 2001, and a finalist in 2002 and 2003.
With over £20m of security projects under way, TPS is consistently at the forefront of its field.
Barry (58) joined TPS Consult in 2000.
He had spent nearly 20 years in military intelligence serving in Germany, the Middle East, Hong Kong and America.
Since leaving the army, he has been employed by national and multi-national companies in security management and security advisory capacities.
