Airport Simulation Proved By 'Witness'
Evidence
A new and innovative software package to model airport operations has been introduced by TPS Consult, the leading UK project management and design consultancy.
It uses the tried and tested WITNESS software package, regarded as one of the best and most widely used simulation programmes available The growth in air traffic in recent years has been huge

Construction Is Not Just A Man's Domain
One year on and female graduates prove that Construction is not just a man's domain.
The Aviation Environment Federation predicts that passenger numbers in the UK is expected to increase from 180 million in 2002 to some 501 million per year by the year 2030, a tenfold rise since 1975.
This level is not exceptional - most other countries are experiencing a similar explosion in air travel.
This level of demand cannot be satisfied with the current airport infrastructure.

In the UK, even with T5 at Heathrow, there will still need to be further expansion, including the construction of two, perhaps three, new runways in the South East, together with associated new terminal and support buildings.
Many other countries envisage similar programmes of construction to meet demand.
The development of a new airport, or a new terminal building, is a very prolonged and complex task.
With the throughput volumes expected, the design has to be right, and it has to maximise usage, utilising all the available in space in the most efficient way.
The WITNESS airport simulation application will enable TPS Consult to take a design and model a variety of airport operations, specifically passenger and baggage movements.
This exercise will help analyse resource requirements and processing capacities, whilst also identifying bottlenecks and verifying planned layouts.
The proposed layouts can be tested for sensitivity to changing environment components, such as flight delays, seating factors and automated check-in use.
Thus, amendments can be made to designs and layouts in advance, instead of relying on expensive and much more disruptive trial-and-error after construction.
WITNESS can also be used in existing terminal scenarios to determine the most effective traffic development: today's busy periods can be repeated again and again to analyse constraints and to provide quick-term solutions.
This is not just restricted to airports, WITNESS can also be used in any application involving large passenger transits such as railway, underground and bus stations.
TPS has used WITNESS already for the evaluation of existing capacity and future terminal layouts for Dublin Airport.
Separate models were developed for a number of different business scenarios, providing the airport operator and the planning team with a multitude of results enabling informed decisions to be made.
Paul Reeder, TPS Consult managing director, said: "This software tool will be invaluable in the design of airports, and other transport termini.
Accurate modelling enables us to identify potential problems and subsequently amend designs and layouts in advance of construction.
It is also an excellent tool for business decision making where there are a variety of options or solutions available.
"With existing termini, the software can use real data in modelling solutions to resolve particular problems, or increase efficiency through layout and other changes." Further information about the Aviation team and its experience in airport simulation can be obtained from Mike Pearson, TPS Consult.
