Construction Is Not Just A Man's Domain
One year on and female graduates prove that Construction is not just a man's domain.
They are working on exciting and diverse projects such as Heathrow T5, Dublin Airport, North Staffordshire Hospital, RAF Brize Norton and London City Airport Hotel.
The girls came into the industry enticed by the diversity and challenge of the working environment.
Graduating with architectural and engineering qualifications, they were welcomed as equals for their skills and their solutions.
Paul Reeder, TPS Consult's managing director, said: "This was not a deliberate policy, it was simply that of the candidates shortlisted more women were suited to the available vacancies than men.
"It is interesting to note that we are now receiving far more applications from women, and that the quality of those applications continues to grow.
There is no reason why the construction industry should be male-dominated, especially on the professional side, and it is pleasing to see the trend beginning to change." Jacqui Smith was delighted to be involved and added, "British design and construction is world class.
Yet less than 10% of construction jobs are occupied by women.
Ensuring we have a skilled workforce from the widest possible talent pool is central to maintaining our global lead.
Increasing the number of women in construction will help us to achieve this.
"I would like to congratulate the latest graduates to join TPS Consult.
These young women are redressing the balance, showing that construction is not just a man's world.
I hope that they will go on to challenging, dynamic careers in the construction industry - where other young women may follow.".
