The new £10 million sports and leisure centre in Thornton Heath, project managed by TPS, is due for completion this month.

The 24-month scheme has been project managed by TPS Schal as part of its retained contract to provide project management (PM) services to the whole of Croydon Council TPS Schal, which has its headquarters in Croydon, has had a team assisting the Property and Asset Management Division of the council since January 2003

Based at both Taberner House and Ellis House, the firm has been working on a number of capital and revenue projects, for various departments including Education, Cultural Services, Housing and Democratic Services.

The Thornton Heath centre, which is a major new facility for Croydon, includes two pools, a large sports hall, changing rooms and a healthy living centre on the ground floor, and a dance studio and fitness suite on upper floors.

TPS Schal's PM role included close liaison with the design team, the client, neighbours and the contractor, Wallace, to bring this quality project to completion on time.

Management of the facility will be contracted to Parkwood when completed at Easter.

The planned opening to the Public will be in May 2004.

Other projects under the PM arrangement have included an extension to Woodcote High School, the construction of a new youth centre and work for the Coroners Office.

TPS Schal is also providing design and planning supervision services to the Property and Asset Management Division.

Martin Hiley, project manager for TPS Schal, said: "Our role with the council has been varied and interesting.

It has included the setting-up and tendering of projects, client liaison and brief development.

We are also undertaking post contract project management and employer's agent duties on projects started by others." "The team is flexible and adjusts to meet the client's needs.

Specialist design advice for meeting the provisions of the Disabled Discrimination Act has recently been requested and studies have now been completed.

Further bids for new project work have also been prepared and submitted.

"We are pleased to be able to provide this range of professional services to the council and look forward to delivering these and others in the future".
