Works on new facilities at RAF Kinloss, the home of the Nimrod, to accommodate a new generation of maritime reconnaissance aircraft, are nearing completion.

The new Nimrod MR4 is due to achieve first flight this summer It will replace the existing fleet of MR2 aircraft

The Nimrod MR4 is a substantially rebuilt aircraft including larger wings, a new undercarriage, a fully refurbished fuselage and more powerful Rolls-Royce engines.

Known as the 'Mighty Hunter', it will remain the world's only large jet-powered maritime patrol aircraft in service.

It supersedes the RAF's existing fleet of Nimrod MR2s, which were derived from the De Havilland Comet, the world's first jet airliner.

Redevelopment of RAF Kinloss is part of the ?2billion+ contract originally placed with BAE Systems in 1996 to develop the aircraft, and provide facilities to support it during transition and service.

TPS Schal was appointed project works advisor to oversee the upgrade of existing facilities and the construction of two major new buildings housing two full mission simulators and software support.

Working with Defence Estates through the Defence Procurement Agency, TPS Schal has supervised the planning, pre-construction, design and construction, and warranty stages.

It was also involved in contractor selection, and will oversee the handover of duties and responsibilities to Defence Estates.

TPS Schal used its sister companies, TPS Consult and Carillion Services, for technical and cost support, and building control advice.

Mowlem, BAE Systems1 construction partner, was appointed to carry out the building elements.

Ken Howells, TPS Schal project manager, said: "This has been a demonstration of an integrated and proactive team approach to a project which has resulted in quality buildings, completed well ahead of programme and within budget.".
