TPS Takes First Look At ?6m Docklands Hotel TPS Consult has been appointed to carry out structural, civil and geotechnical engineering assignments at the new City Airport Travelodge, Silvertown, in London's Docklands, by George and Harding Construction, the design and build contractor, with architects Wyn Green.

The £6.7 million project is unique in that the top five storeys of the split six- and seven-storey hotel are timber frame.

The highest timber frame building in the UK is currently six stories.

TPS Consult will initially assess the geotechnical and contamination issues on the site, and prepare a risk assessment and proposed remediation strategy to satisfy the planning requirements.

As part of this strategy, CFA (continuous flight auger) piles will be used in order to prevent surface contaminants being transferred to the underlying groundwater.

A munitions survey, and risk assessment for unexploded wartime bombs will also be carried out.

The design of a temporary access to the site, together with the design of permanent accesses, with associated relocation of bus stops, and provision of pedestrian and cycle facilities, will also be undertaken by TPS Consult as part of this initial brief.

Work is expected to start on site in August 2004.

The hotel is scheduled to be completed in 2005.
