For the second year running, Barry Walker, a senior security advisor at TPS Consult, has won a prestigious international award from ASIS International, the world's largest organisation for security professionals The Regional Recognition Award rewards his successful efforts in promoting the Certified Protection Professional (CPP) qualification in the European region

Since he became chief instructor for ASIS in the UK in 2001, Barry has enhanced teaching and resources to achieve a consistent 85 per cent pass rate - a level not equalled anywhere else in the ASIS organisation's 30-odd regions worldwide.

CPP is a security management qualification which demonstrates an in-depth knowledge in areas such as management, physical and electronic security, personnel security, investigations, information security and English law.

It is dynamic, in that all qualified CPPs must keep their knowledge up to date through CPD (continued professional development), in order to retain their qualification.

If they do not, they have to resit the exam! Next year, as well as remaining CPP chief instructor, Barry has been asked to chair the UK Professional Development Committee, which organises programmes and events designed to attract students into a career in security.

ASIS International, which was originally founded in 1955 as the American Society for Industrial Security, now has more than 35,000 members worldwide.

The UK chapter is the largest outside the USA, with nearly 700 members.

To be eligible to take the CPP examination, candidates must have at least nine years? experience in the industry, including three in security management.

Barry is a key member of the security and counter-terrorism team at TPS Consult, the largest such team in the UK.

He contributed to the firm being winner of the ?Best Security Consultant? category in the SMT Security Excellence Awards in 2001, finalist in 2002 and 2003, and shortlisted again for the 2004 awards in two categories, this and the International award.

With over £20m of security projects under way, TPS is consistently at the forefront of its field.

Barry (59) joined TPS Consult in 2000.

He had spent nearly 20 years in military intelligence serving in Germany, the Middle East, Hong Kong and America.

Since leaving the army, he has been employed by national and multi-national companies in security management and security advisory capacities.
