TPS has won a Structural Commercial Award from the Institution of Structural Engineers.

TPS, the design and project management division of Carillion Business Services, has won a Structural Commercial Award from the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) Midlands Counties branch for the new Mercedes Benz showroom and workshop at Lawley Middleway, Birmingham.

IStructE is the world's largest professional body for structural engineers, with over 20,000 members in 100 countries.

TPS carried out remediation work on the hydrocarbon-polluted site close to the River Rae, to allow construction work for the car dealership to commence.

The geo-environmental team worked closely with developer Carillion Developments/Cannon House Properties to identify risk during the purchase of the site, and went on to successfully steer the remediation strategy through the planning and construction process.

Richard Davis, associate director for TPS, collected the award at IStructE's annual dinner at the Birmingham Botanical Gardens.

He said: "It is a great achievement to receive this award in recognition of the solutions we provided at Lawley Middleway".

"Our innovative showroom design included extensive exposed tubular steelwork with unobtrusive connections and no diagonal bracing".

"The ecologically sound engineering strategy incorporated the clean-up of underground hydrocarbons, preventing pollution to a nearby sensitive waterway".

The single-storey Mercedes showroom has glazed elevations and a central circular 'drum' reception area accessed by a spiral staircase.

There is a separate adjacent Smartcar showroom and workshop facilities providing 22 maintenance bays.

Construction of the dealership was completed by Carillion Building in August 2004.
