TPS Security and Counter Terrorism team has won a prestigious international award from ASIS International, the world's largest organisation for security professionals.

The TPS Security and Counter Terrorism team has won a prestigious international award from ASIS International, the world's largest organisation for security professionals The Regional Recognition Award, one of only three awarded worldwide, rewards the firm's commitment to the security industry, its efforts to maintain and improve standards, and its assistance in promoting the Certified Protection Professional (CPP) qualification in the European region

Security has become an even higher priority in most countries, and the role of the security professional, both in terms of the design and operation of buildings, facilities and infrastructure, has been elevated significantly.

ASIS International, which was originally founded in 1955 as the American Society for Industrial Security, now has more than 35,000 members worldwide.

The UK chapter is the largest outside the USA, with nearly 700 members.

TPS has one of the largest concentrations in the industry of CPP qualified staff in a single office.

CPP is a security management qualification which indicates an in-depth knowledge in areas such as management, physical and electronic security, personnel security, investigations, information security and English law.

To be eligible to take the CPP examination, candidates must have at least nine years' experience in the industry, including three in security management.

The qualification is dynamic, in that all qualified CPPs must keep their knowledge up to date through CPD (continued professional development), in order to retain their qualification.

If they do not, they have to re-sit the exam! Barry Walker, a senior security adviser at TPS, became chief instructor for ASIS in the UK in 2001.

He significantly enhanced teaching and resources to achieve a consistent 85 per cent pass rate - a level not equalled anywhere else in the ASIS organisation's 30-odd regions worldwide.

He has also been a recipient of a Regional Recognition Award from ASIS in 2003 and 2004 for his personal commitment to the industry.

Apart from teaching, Barry is also chairing the UK Professional Development Committee, which organises programmes and events designed to attract students into a career in security.

He is also assisting the new Norwegian Chapter of ASIS to set up its training and examination system.

The security and counter-terrorism team at TPS was the winner of the "Best Security Consultant" category in the SMT Security Excellence Awards in 2001, finalist in 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005; in 2004, it was also shortlisted in the category of "Best International Achievement".

With over GBP20m of security projects under way, TPS continues to be consistently at the forefront of its field.
