TPS has won a prestigious award for its role in the Terminal 4 project at Barajas Airport in Madrid.

Design and professional services company TPS has won a prestigious award for its role in the Terminal 4 project at Barajas Airport in Madrid It received the IStructE (Institution of Structural Engineering) Award for commercial or retail structures during a ceremony at the East Wintergarden in Canary Wharf

TPS was a joint originator of UTE, the four-company team which planned, designed and delivered the scheme.

The other companies were Richard Rogers Partnership (who TPS invited to join the team) and Madrid-based Estudio Lamela and Intec.

Richard Rogers Partnership was the recipient last month of the coveted Stirling Prize for its role as project architect on Terminal 4.

As a key member of the delivery team, TPS led the following discipline areas during the planning and design process: brief preparation, terminal planning, structural engineering, building services including CFD modelling, civil engineering and baggage handling concept design.

Terminal 4 was the largest construction project in Europe, providing a main terminal of approximately 500,000 sq m, a satellite building of approximately 250,000 sq m, an interconnecting tunnel with people mover, baggage and services cores and multi-storey car parking for 9,000 vehicles.

The project was won through a multinational design competition and the construction value was over andeuro;1billion.

The building is scheduled to handle 35 million passengers per year, approximately 12,000 passengers per hour, and will serve 64 contact stands and 55 remote aircraft stands.

The terminal was opened on February 4 2006, and has been praised for its functional efficiency by passengers, airlines, and the client AENA, the Spanish Airports Authority.

The judges commented that the project was an example of structural engineering at its finest and that a combination of good detailing and careful proportioning in space enclosure provide a great deal of visual excitement.

Stuart Walsh, TPS Director of Aviation, expressed his delight and sense of achievement in being a member of the team that delivered the project, believing that the joint venture planning and design team provided a quality solution for all stakeholders, and that TPS made a major contribution to the project's success.

This project is one of the most significant work packages undertaken by the TPS aviation team.

Other major TPS projects include Dublin Airport Authority masterplan and Pier D work, Durban's new Airport masterplan, Johannesburg Terminal development, Zurich's midfield terminal, Norwich Airport, East Midlands Airport, Athens Cargo development, and Isle of Man Airport.

TPS has had a framework agreement with BAA stretching over 10 years with projects including Terminal 5, Stansted masterplan, and the A380 preparation works.
