Five outstanding construction organisations have been honoured with regional National Business Awards at glittering gala ceremonies in London and Manchester this month.

Over 1000 business leaders, press and other VIPs attended the prestigious Awards dinners.

Hundreds of companies entered the Regional Finals of The National Business Awards, sponsored by Orange.

Acknowledged by The Chancellor of the Exchequer as "the UK's business Oscars", the Awards recognise and reward excellence, innovation and success.

They are open to companies of all sizes and from any sector.

Winners now advance as finalists in The National Business Awards programme on 7 November in London and may later go on to The European Business Awards in Brussels in January.

North East Award Winners Strategic Team Group of Glasshoughton, Castleford won The City and Guilds Employer of the Year Award for demonstrating how, through well-adopted company values, a stimulating and supportive workplace - and the active development of all its employees - results in sound and sustained commercial success.

In an impressive hat-trick, STG also took home The Award for Business Improvement Through People and The Growth Strategy of the Year Award.

The HSE Health and Safety Award was won by Morrison Construction Services of Wakefield.

Matlock based Morrison believes its outstanding health and safety record to be due to honesty and mutual trust with its staff, as well as constant best practice sharing across the business operations.

North West Award Winner The HSE Health and Safety Award and The Customer Focus Award were presented to Ashtead Plant Hire Company Limited (A-Plant) of Warrington.

Leading the way in its sector, A-Plant is dedicated to creating a 'Customer-first Culture' and has extended its HandS responsibilities to customers, suppliers and staff with the publication and distribution of a 60-page site safety pack covering every aspect of equipment safety.

South East Award Winner The Customer Focus Award was presented to Overbury Plc of London.

A main contractor specialising in the fit out and refurbishment of commercial premises for the private and public sectors, work is carried out nationwide on projects ranging from £5,000 to £40m in value.

Wales and West Country Award Winner The Award for Business Improvement Through People was received by Port Talbot based firm GenSet.

A major supplier to the British and increasingly, the European, rental market, GenSet operates strategic alliances with a small number of world class manufacturers.

"The quality of entries in the 2006 Regional Finals of The National Business Awards has been outstanding," said Adrian Tripp, chief executive of the Awards.

"Some outstanding success stories have emerged from these regional programmes.

Enterprise, innovation and ethical business practice is thriving across the country and we are delighted that, through these Awards, new and emerging businesses will benefit from learning about the challenging experiences of this year's winners." Neil Laidler, Director of Enterprise, Orange Business Services said, "The winners of the National Business Awards demonstrate a drive, passion and optimism for business.

We are proud to be associated with such successful British business talent and congratulate all the winners on achieving this fantastic accolade.".
