A member of the Trussed Rafter Association has supplied a large number of factory fabricated mono-pitch trusses for a council-led project that has brought an area of derelict industrial land back into use.

Harlow Timber Systems worked with Chesterfield Borough Council and main contractor, GF Tomlinson on solving the design problems associated with constructing a large workshop building at Colliery Close in Staveley.

With the TRA member being brought on board by the project team at an early stage, the manufacturer was able to influence the design so that the total amount of steel required to support the 56-metre long, 28-metre wide roof was significantly reduced.

The final solution featured an arrangement of 12-metre long mono-trusses connected on site to a series of 16 metre long stub trusses; all supported by a main steel girder running the length of the structure.

A total of 275 trusses in 20 different configurations were produced for the project.

Harlow Timber Systems was able to offer Chesterfield's architectural department further savings by removing the diagonal brace at the upper end of the stub truss so that a maintenance walkway with service routing could be created.

Covered by a lightweight metal tiling system, laid over battens and counter-battens, the roof to the Staveley building features hipped ends.

The development has now been let to tenants.
