Trussed rafters prove equal to golf club challenge
Member of Trussed Rafter Association has produced a large number of special prefabricated timber trusses to create roofscape for National Golf Club Hotel.
The hospice has an unusual cruciform design with two wings extending from either side of a central atrium which features brick built towers carrying large glazed elements.
The laminated timber beams - measuring up to 150 x 495 mm in section and spanning more than six metres - form a portal frame plus main rafters and purlins; all jointed with secret connectors and featured beneath the plastered soffits.
For the wings to the Severn Hospice, which contain wards, individual bedrooms and treatment facilities, Wyckham Blackwell fabricated in the order of 500 trusses with a 22.5 pitch.
These not only form a spacious maintenance walkway down the centre of each roof space, but were also provided with trimmers and infill timbers to accommodate the many rooflights bringing natural illumination to the various spaces.
Wyckham Blackwell was awarded this prestigious contract on the basis of its ability to supply an integrated solution of laminated beams and trussed timber rafters which would meet the aesthetic, structural and logistical requirements of the project.
