Altogether, 230 Aztecs, rated 9kW each, are being fitted in four-bedroom time-share units on the site, including 150 involving conversion from earlier electric storage radiator installations.

Bought via major builders' merchant Jewson, electric boilers were chosen partly to eliminate the risks and extra work associated with gas - for example flueing for products of combustion, annual servicing and landlord inspections.

The boilers are used in conjunction with radiators at Lodge Assets and could equally well be employed with underfloor heating systems.

Conventional controls are used and the electricity supply tariff is Economy 7.

There are no problems with recent building regulations changes involving electrics as qualified electricians deal with electrical aspects of the installations.

Usage patterns will vary according to the individual requirements of the time-share occupants, regardless of the time of year because, as Tony Hill points out, the boilers respond rapidly to demands for heat.

Other advantages of Aztecs include user appreciation of their response capability (compared with the vagaries of storage radiators), exclusive British Standards Institute's kitemarking, space-saving size, siting flexibility with no need for an outside wall, and virtually 100% power-to-heat efficiency.

Gas-fired heating is not involved in any of the time-share units and is only being used centrally for the leisure centre and swimming pool on the site.

Trianco, besides manufacturing Aztec electric boilers, also manufactures gas boilers and is a leading producer of oil-fired boilers.

Condensing oil and gas models are available to meet upgraded building regulations part L requirements.
