Water management is fast rising up the agenda of UK industry, says the IWEX Report, commissioned by the organisers of IWEX 2005.

Water management is fast rising up the agenda of UK industry, says the IWEX Report (commissioned by the organisers of IWEX 2005) The report looked at industrial water users across a number of sectors including agriculture, food manufacture and brewing, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, paper and pulp, and petrochemicals, in order to assess the commercial impact of water and wastewater management on these industries and the issues they face

The IWEX report found that UK industry is spending on average 4.43% of turnover on water and the management of water, wastewater and effluent.

This represents almost GBP20bn spend a year and a huge opportunity for suppliers.

Over half the companies interviewed have discussed water strategy at Board level in the past year and over 80% have a specific water strategy.

Key strategy drivers are a lowering of production costs and improving plant longevity.

With increasing importance on sustainability and ever more onerous legislative environment, there is also mounting pressure on industry to improve environmental performance - also cited as a key driver behind water strategies.

The fact that over a third of those companies interviewed also had a specific CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) policy also backs this up.

The increasing focus on reducing costs and environmental impact means managing water more efficiently with better business processes and innovative technology.

This requires some serious investment and the IWEX report showed that over half of these businesses plan to invest in water management in the next five years and more than a quarter in the next two.

Key investment areas range from new equipment and pumps to environmental monitoring and consultant services with the main investment priorities centring on the treatment and disposal of wastewater and effluent - which with an average spend of 2.55% of turnover, is a major cost area for UK businesses.

According to the IWEX report, over half of these companies have worked with water management consultants and specialist companies in addressing these issues, but there is still a real opportunity for improved relationships with 40% of these businesses saying they don't know enough companies/consultants who can help them.

And relationships with water equipment suppliers could also be improved.

Though a quarter of businesses say their suppliers are good, another third say they are merely average and do not understand their individual business needs.

Water companies fare slightly better with a third rating their local company as good and 40% average.

IWEX, The International Water and Effluent Exhibition, which takes place at the NEC from 18th - 20th October will provide an opportunity for industry to meet and network with these suppliers, specialist consultants and water companies - it is the only UK event where all these people get together under one roof.

It will also provide an opportunity for industrial water users to explore in more detail how their water challenges can be addressed by attending a series of free-to-attend "Water In Industry" presentations which will draw together industry experts in each of the sectors.

The show also provides a forum for networking, understanding legal responsibilities and assessing the impact of the new directives, participating in industry debates and getting up to speed with the latest developments and innovations.

IWEX is now open for visitor registration and exhibition bookings, and is backed by a full programme of marketing and event support.

For more information about the show or industry seminars, or to download a copy of the IWEX report, visit www.iwex.co.uk or call Dan Ware on +44 (0)1895 454545.

The event is being staged by the Turret Group, organisers of the hugely successful IWEX 2003.
