Theatreplan pots black stage in Sheffield

Theatre consultancy Theatreplan has to fit its latest project, at Sheffield's Crucible Theatre, around the theatre's commitments to the World Snooker Championship.

The Crucible is the main producing house in the Sheffield Theatres Complex (which also comprises the Lyceum Theatre and The Studio), and is well respected for its theatrical performances as well as the annual televised snooker championships.

Built in 1971 and seating 980 in a thrust-stage configuration, the theatre has just completed the first phase of its current refurbishment project - to replace the stage with a versatile system that allows the stage level to be easily and safely changed for different functions, including the forthcoming snooker championship.

Theatreplan's Clive Odom says, "The stage system was developed using Steeldeck Easydeck platforms which are the 'industry standard' staging system in the UK.

This provides a reasonably low cost but practical solution for a modular stage as required at the Crucible Theatre".

For snooker, the stage needs to be strong and stiff, or as Pete Godwin, director of World Snooker Services describes, "as good as a concrete floor".

But for the more traditional dramatic performances, the stage floor also has to accommodate openings for entrances or stage effects.

Theatreplan are not only acting as theatre consultants, they also provided project management for the new stage floor which had to be completed in advance of this year's championship starting on April 19th.

Affordable and appropriate technology for a regional repertory theatre was the key, and so the new stage floor is constructed using an industry-standard platform system to provide the rigidity needed and the versatility required to allow simple integration of temporary scenic structures.

The new stage represented the initial phase of the project and after it was completed on time, David Hobson of the Sheffield Theatres Crucible Trust / Hobson Hague Consultancy complemented Theatreplan's efforts, saying, "thank you for your hard work over the last few months to make sure that this part of the project was completed efficiently with the minimum of fuss and on time, as it not only raised the confidence levels externally that we can achieve what we set out to do but internally also set a standard for the rest of the project".

Theatreplan will continue work on site when the next phase of the project begins in May, following the championships.

This includes refurbishment and extension to the foyers, including a new creative development area, the refurbishment of dressing rooms and backstage accommodation, the refurbishment of main house seating, and the rewiring of lighting, sound and communications within main auditorium.

A new stage rigging installation is also planned.
