Tube Lines is refurbishing Acton Town station as part of its station upgrade programme for 2007-8.

Tube Lines is combining the station upgrade works with important step free access work to open up the network to those passengers with mobility impairments Work at this station has just begun

The works will take place during limited hours when the station is closed during the night approximately between 1am - 4:30am.

Every night there will be a team of up to 30 engineers committed to delivering a modern, clean and safe station, with the refurbishment of the station and installation of lifts to be completed by early autumn 2008.

Tube Lines is refurbishing Acton Town station to improve passenger experiences on the London Underground and to improve accessibility for passengers with push chairs and those in wheelchairs.

Passengers changing at Acton Town for Heathrow, who have heavy luggage will also benefit.

Two new lifts will be installed inside the station and safety and security will improve with better lighting and the number off CCTV cameras increasing from 24 to 71.

The installation of 11 new help points will provide passengers with more access to information and increase the security of passengers.

The step free access works pose significant engineering challenges for the project team particularly given that the team only have on average three and a half hours each night to carry out the work.

To enable more time to work, the team will be hoarding off limited areas inside the station so that some work can take place during the day without impacting the safe operation of the station.

Despite the major time restrictions, the project team is confident that they will complete all works on time.

The work is being managed directly by Tube Lines to enable better management and control of the differing challenges, conditions and interfaces that can be encountered during a station upgrade.

In the past, the role of principle contractor has often been outsourced but by cutting out a whole tier of middle management and giving complete control to the project manager on site, Tube Lines is delivering even greater performance benefits and is building on its strong record of delivery.

Linda Muzikants, Tube lines project manager for Acton Town station said: "Making the Tube more accessible is vital, especially with the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games ahead of us.

It's a difficult process increasing access to the largely Victorian network and requires complex engineering but this project is a positive move.

The general refurbishment of the station will also bring many improvements to the many passengers that use this station each year.

"On behalf of my team, I would like to apologise for any inconvenience this project may cause during the construction phase but rest assured we will do what is necessary to keep disturbance to a minimum.

I do appreciate the co-operation of passengers and nearby residents while the station is brought into the 21st century.".
