Work has begun on Hounslow West station to improve travelling experience for commuters Tube Lines has begun the refurbishment work of Hounslow West station on the Piccadilly line.

The revamp will bring the 80 year old station into the 21st century Hounslow West is a key station for hundreds of people providing a link to the UK's largest airport - Heathrow airport

The overhaul will take place during the limited hours when the station is closed at night, between 1am and 5am.

It will improve the safety and security of the thousands of commuters who use the station each day.

In addition weekend closures will take place to maximise the efficiency of the project.

The refurbishment to Hounslow West station is expected to be completed by November 2008.

Tube Lines is working to make Hounslow West station a safe and pleasant environment for all commuters who use the station.

The number of CCTV cameras will increase from 12 to 30, along with new personal help points.135 speakers are also being put in, for a new clearer public address system, meaning information being passed to our commuters easily and quickly.

The typical delivery time of a station upgrade has been reduced by more than half since Tube Lines first took on its station programme, for example it took just four months to refurbish North Ealing station, whereas it originally took between nine and 18 months to refurbish a station.

Originally opened as Hounslow Barracks in the 1880s, the station itself is 125 years old.

Its name was changed to Hounslow West in December 1925 before moving to a new station building in the late 1920s.

The new station was designed by Charles Holden and now is a listed building.

Tube Lines will retain the remarkable heritage aspects of this building, whilst making it a more suitable environment for today's passengers.

Mic Denti, Tube Lines' Project Manager for Hounslow West station said: "Once complete, the refurbishment works at Hounslow West station will provide commuters with a clean and fresh station to be in.

My team and I are working as hard and fast as possible, in the short spaces of time we have, to provide the public with a safer and more comfortable environment.

"Our main aim is to cause as little disruption as possible throughout the renovation work, although I apologise in advance for any disruption caused to passengers and nearby residents while the refurbishment is completed.".
