ACES faculty appointment for Turner and
Townsend

Turner and Townsend has been awarded the project and cost management commission for new building for Sheffield Hallam University.

International construction and management consultant Turner and Townsend has been awarded the project and cost management commission for an GBP18M new building for Sheffield Hallam University, which will house the Faculty of Arts, Computing, Engineering and Sciences (ACES) The new building, located at Furnival Street in Sheffield and to be designed as a sustainable low energy building with a BREEAM rating of "Very Good" to "Excellent", will bring together staff and students working on various existing sites across different campuses, and have a gross internal floor area of around 9,500m2

In addition, the University's Sheaf and Harmer Buildings will undergo remodelling and refurbishment providing specialist workshop/teaching space for the ACES faculty.

Dave Furniss, Acting Deputy Head of Estates Operations at Sheffield Hallam University, said: "This building is vital to the future of the University and in particular the Faculty of ACES.

It will provide a Gateway to the City Campus and is just one of many exciting developments currently taking place in this part of the City".

"We have worked successfully with Turner and Townsend previously and look forward to continuing this relationship throughout the project." Mark Deakin, Director of Turner and Townsend, said: "We are delighted to continue our involvement with Sheffield Hallam University on this pivotal scheme within their overall Estates Strategy".

"This appointment, through the OGC Buying Solutions framework, follows on from a number of successful projects over the years, and the Turner and Townsend team will seek to deliver the best possible solution within the University's budget".

The architect for the commission is Bond Bryan, while WSP will act as structural engineer and mechanical and electrical services engineer.

It is expected tenders for the new ACES building will be issued early summer 2006 with the building ready for occupation in Sept 2008.
