Royal Zoological Society of Scotland have appointed Turner and Townsend to assist in the development of a new facility at Edinburgh Zoo.

The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) have appointed international construction and management consultant Turner and Townsend to assist in the development of a new GBP5.65 million world class facility at Edinburgh Zoo to house chimpanzees and other primates as part of the Budongo project Appointed via the OGCbuying solutions framework procedure, Turner and Townsend will provide turnkey design solutions including project management, cost management and planning supervision

The Budongo Forest in Uganda is home to around 600-700 chimpanzees, and the project aims to study and conserve one of the world's most endangered species.

RZSS are currently the primary funder of the Uganda Forest Project, and this new facility will provide a link to the work already being undertaken as well as enabling research and observation of the chimps in captivity in Edinburgh.

The new building will house up to 50 chimpanzees and feature 3 interlinked living "pods", an auditorium, interactive public mall, cognitive research laboratory shared by Scotland's major universities and a significant external living area.

The enclosure will replace the current chimpanzee house and form the entry to Edinburgh zoo's tropical forest biome.

Neil McCowan, Director of Turner and Townsend's Edinburgh office, said: "We are delighted to continue our relationship with Scotland's world class primate research facility and premier visitor attraction".

In addition, Turner and Townsend are acting as project and cost managers on the GBP65 million Masterplan development of Edinburgh Zoo as well as leading the development of the Zoo's aim for ISO14001 Environmental Accreditation, understood to the be the first zoo to the United Kingdom to achieve the accreditation.

As part of the commission, Turner and Townsend project managers will lead the design team meetings and co-ordinate outputs, develop key aspect designs including the main entrance building, WOW exhibits, key visitor node structures and behind the scenes structures, undertake project programme development and monitor system implementation as well as assist in public funding applications.

Cost managers will produce the overall cost plan for the development in support of the funding applications.

Turner and Townsend's environmental consultants are working closely with RZSS to review all existing environmental systems, establish, develop and plan for the implementation of the ISO 14001 accreditation as well as produce the policy and structure of the system linking the procedures element to the current health and safety system.

The Masterplan will be officially launched in an exhibition in February 2006.

Construction of the Budongo primate enclosure is programmed to commence in November 2006.
